We know that if you own LG Optimus G Pro, then chances are that you are extremely satisfied with the device. Because after all, anything with a quad-core 1.7GHz processor, 2GB RAM and a 5.5 inch full HD display should keep us satisfied for another year at least. But one should know that what could make it better than what it is right now is rooting, and if you are up for it then we’ll show you how to do it in the guide below. The guide also contains the procedure to install custom recovery.
Note – The procedure below will work with all variants of the E98x model (E980, E985, E988 and E989) except for the AT&T E980 version with the recent 10P firmware update.
Step 1: You should fully backup your Android device before rooting it. Backup all your SMS, Backup/Export Contacts, Backup APN settings. You can take help from our article on Tutorial for creating backup of Android device without root access.
Step 2: You should Backup all apps on your device, unrooted users can follow this method procedure to backup apps. If you have already rooted your device then use Titanium to Backup and restore apps and cache data.
Step 3: You should enable USB debugging on your device, to activate USB Debug go to “Settings>Developer options” and check the USB debug option box. Problem enabling USB Debugging you can follow article on How to enable USB debugging on Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread.
Step 4: There should be 50% or more amount of battery juice on your device. To know how much charge your device is having you can use our tutorial on how to get battery percentage on Status bar.
Step 5: You should disable security apps and programs like Antivirus and Firewall on your Android device as they may interrupt the procedure.

How to root LG Optimus G Pro E98X
Step 1- Enable USB debugging on your device. For this, go to Settings > Development options and tick the USB debugging checkbox. If you don’t find the Development options section then go to Settings > about phone and keep tapping on the buildnumber until you see the ‘you are now a developer‘message. Now, you should find the development options listed under Settings.
Step 2 – Ensure that your device is in Charge mode and connect it to your WindowsPC. Remember that if there are any drivers being installed at this point; let them do so before continuing.
Step 3 – Extract E980-UniversalRoot.zip to a folder on your desktop.
Step 4 – Now, from the extracted folder, double-click on CurrentRoot.bat to begin the rooting procedure.
Step 5 – Follow the on-screen instructions and when prompted to change your device mode to MTP, do it and if there are any drivers being installed at this point, let them do so before continuing. Now, hit any key on your keyboard to continue after this.
Step 6 – Now, when your device reboots, disconnect your device from your PC and it’s done.
Now you have root access on your device.
How to install custom recovery on LG Optimus G Pro E98X
Follow the below given procedure after rooting your device.
Note – Following this procedure will void your device’s warranty if you have. So, only continue if you are okay with this.
- Download Free Gee app and install it.
Step 1- Once the app is installed, open it up and you should be asked for Super user access, so grant Super user privileges.
Step 2 – now, on the Unlock my phone button and tap on I agree to the warning popup.
Step 3 – On the next Disable LGE Security popup, tap on Yes and the app will now show you the relevant custom recoveries for your device.
Step 4 – From the drop-down menu, select your preferred custom recovery.
Step 5 – when selected, tap on Unlock my phone and tap on I agree for the warning again. The app will now download the selected boot image and recovery image to your device, and back up your original boot and recovery images.
Step 6 – At last, you should see the ‘Success. Your [device name] has been liberated! ‘message. So, tap on the Yay! Button and it’s done.
Now have a custom recovery installed on your device and to access custom recovery, power down your phone, then press and hold the Volume Up and Power buttons until you get to the fastboot mode. Then press the Volume Down button twice and the Power button to enter recovery mode.
