Sony Xperia Ion LTE is available with AT&T and Verizon now. The phone was launched with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and now update is available for upgrading to Android 4.0 IceCream Sandwich. I do not think it would be getting Jelly Bean update any sooner. Right now, if you have rooted your Xperia Ion [AT&T LT28at or Verizon Lt28i] on Gingerbread then you will lose the root access if you upgrade to Official ICS firmware. We have created a Tutorial that will guide your through the process of upgrading your Xperia Ion to ICS and then rooting it easily. You just need to create Backup of your apps using Titanium Backup and other things as well and then you can go ahead with the upgrade. You can root Xperia Ion on ICS and then restore all data.

Easy Root Sony Xperia Ion

Pre-Requisite:

  1. Before you begin the rooting and flashing process, you need to perform few things on your device –
  • Enable ‘Unknown sources’ through Systems > Application Settings.
  • Enable ‘USB Debugging’ and ‘Stay awake’ on Settings > Applications.
  • Adjust ‘Screen timeout’ to 30 minutes through Settiongs > Display Settings.
  • You need to charge your Xperia Ion battery to minimum of 90%.
  • You need to download Bin4ry & Androxyde Flashtool by clicking here, to flash stock Sony Xperia (ICS or Gingerbread) firmware.
  • Generic International ICS firmware LT28h [Download]
  • Root Toolkit [Download], meant for Xperia S and Ion.
  • You need to install .Net Framework 3.5 or any latest version to enable toolkit and flashtool to run on Windows PC.
  • Ensure that Android SDK installed properly along with ADB to be able to run on your Windows PC.
  1. Ensure that you have disabled the antivirus or firewall installed on your Computer or Sony device as they generally cause interruption during any root and flashing process.
  2. Backup of data, settings, files and apps are required to be done as they are going to wipe out and will lose them all if you begin the installation without taking the backup. So, it’s better to create the backup of SMS, Contacts, MMS, Images, Audios, Videos, Call Logs, Bookmarks, Wi-Fi, APN settings as well as MMS settings etc.
