One X+ is the latest flagship smartphone from HTC. It has been getting quite a lot of attention, which is normal considering how good and popular the device has been ever since it was launched. Keeping this in mind we have come up with an article which will help you to unlock the Bootloader of your One X and root it. This way you can install many custom ROM’s firmware which is available for it. Also, we will be guiding you on how to ClockworkMod Recovery and TWRP Recovery on to it, all in this single guide. How to Unlock Bootloader and Root HTC One X plus Install CWM- TWRP Recovery

Pre-Requisite:

What to do before installing ROM or Rooting your device?

Step 1: We always suggest a full backup of your Android device before you go for rooting or installing custom ROM. Backup all your SMS, Backup/Export Contacts, Backup APN settings. You can also follow our Tutorial on creating backup of Android device without root access.

Step 2: You should also Backup all apps, if you have not rooted your device yet then follow this procedure to backup apps. If you have an rooted device then use Titanium to Backup and restore apps and cache data.

Step 3: Enable USB debugging on your device, Go to settings>>Developer options and check the USB debug box. If you are not able to get it check our detailed guide on enabling USB debugging on Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread.

Step 4: Always check your battery before performing rooting procedure or installing ROM. If you have low battery status then you may face interruption while the procedure and it may brick your device. Check our tutorial on how to get battery percentage on Status bar.

Step 5: If you are going to install Custom ROM then it’s better to create a full Nandroid Backup of your device. You can also use Custom recovery to create Nandroid backup.

Step 6: We would also suggest disabling security apps and programs like Antivirus and Firewall on your Android device as it may interrupt the procedure.

I am sure that if you take care of above mentioned steps carefully then there is lot less chance of issues. If you face any issues with ROM, then you can revert back to previous Nandroid Backup. Also you have all SMS, settings and apps data with you that can be restored anytime.

Download RootBoot.zip, HTC Sync Software, Fastboot, Latest Build of CWM Recovery and TWRP Recovery Image from here to your computer. Extract the “RootBoot.zip” file into a folder onto the desktop for convenience. Install HTC Sync software on your computer so as to install all the required drivers for the phone. Create a new folder in the root of the C: drive on your PC and name it as Fastboot, then extract the contents of the downloaded Fastboot file here. Also, copy the downloaded CWM Recovery image and TWRP Recovery image into the Fastboot folder.

Procedure to Unlock Bootloader and Root HTC One X + Install CWM/TWRP Recovery:

Step 1: First of all, head to HTC’s Official Website and register yourself by creating an account in it, then download the Fastboot files onto your computer. Then, create a new folder in your device and name it as Fastboot.

Step 2: Next, head to http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/ and select “All other Supported Models” and then select “begin unlock boot loader” and then tick both the options to proceed.  Now, reboot your phone so as to enter it in HBOOT. To do so, power off your phone by holding the power button down for 5-7 seconds, then press and hold the Volume down button after which the device will boot into the HBOOT.

Step 3: Next, select Fast boot with Volume Up or Down then press the Power button once after which the device will boot into fast boot mode.

Step 4: Now, connect your phone to the PC via original USB cable i.e. the cable that came with it

Step 5: Next, open a command prompt window and type the commands that follows:

cd c:\fastboot

fastboot oem get_identifier_token

Step 6: Now, copy the code and paste the same at the bottom of the HTC page and then submit it.

Step 7: Soon within a few minutes, you will receive an e-mail with a link to download the “Unlock-code.bin”.

Step 8: Now, type the command that follows in the command prompt window:

fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin

Step 9: Now, the screen will change and then press Volume Up to accept and power to confirm the same and there you go, you have now successfully unlocked the Bootloader of your HTC One X smartphone.

Step 10: Next, to root your HTC One X, once again connect your phone to the PC, if you’ve disconnected it after unlocking the Bootloader.

Step 11: Now, open the “Rootboot.bat” file by double-clicking on it, you’ve achieved after extracting the downloaded file.

Step 12: As soon as the application has been launched, press Enter and then the process of rooting will commence. Once the rooting is done, the same will be mentioned on screen. Disconnect the device and download the Superuser app from the Google PLAY Store and update the binaries.

Step 13: You can download Root Checker app from the Google Play Store, it will help you to check whether your HTC One X is rooted or not.

Step 14: Now, to install ClockworkMod Recovery on your HTC One X, first of all connect it to the PC via USB cable if you’ve disconnected it after rooting it.

Step 15: Next, open up a Command prompt window, change the directory to the folder you’ve created in the C drive, by typing:

C:\fastboot

Step 16: Now, type the following command in the Command prompt to check if your device is being detected properly.

fastboot devices”, which should return a string of alpha-numeric characters. If you don’t see them, make sure you have installed all the necessary drivers.

Step 17: Next, type the following command in the Command prompt window:

fastboot flash recovery recovery_v.0.1.img

Step 18: After typing the above command, the installation of CWM Recovery will start on your phone. As soon as it is complete, you will see a confirmation message in the Command prompt window.

Step 19: Now, type the command that follows in the Command prompt window to boot your HTC One X into Hboot mode:

fastboot reboot-bootloader

Step 20: In Hboot, use the Volume key to scroll to recovery and then push the power button to boot into CWM Recovery.

Step 21: Now, those users who prefer to install TWRP Recovery, first of all turn off your phone. Then, turn it ON while holding the Volume Down button till a menu shows up. Here, highlight the FASTBOOT option using the volume keys to scroll and then select it using the Power button to enter Fastboot mode. Your phone’s screen should now say FASTBOOT USB.

Step 22: Now, connect your phone to the PC once again via USB cable.

Step 23: Next, Click on Start menu » All Programs » Accessories, right-click on Command Prompt and click on Run as administrator. For Windows 8 users, this can be done by right-clicking on the extreme bottom left corner of the taskbar, then selecting “Command Prompt (admin)”.

Step 24: Now, to flash the TWRP image on the phone, open up Command prompt window and change the path in command prompt to the Fastboot. If the Fastboot folder is in drive C on your computer, enter CD C:\Fastboot in command prompt (and press Enter) to change the path to the Fastboot folder.

Step 25: Next, enter “fastboot devices”. If your phone has been detected properly, you will see a device ID show up in command prompt. If nothing comes up, ensure that you have installed the drivers properly.

Step 26: Now, flash TWRP recovery on the phone by entering “fastboot flash recovery *filename*.img” in the command prompt, where *filename* has to be replaced by the name of the recovery file.

Step 27: As soon as, the recovery is flashed, you should see a “finished”/“OKAY” message in the command prompt. Then, type “fastboot reboot” and press enter to reboot your phone.

Step 28: Now, to flash into TWRP Recovery. Reboot your phone while holding down the Volume Down button. Then, using the volume buttons, scroll to the RECOVERY option, then select it using the power button to reboot the phone into TWRP.
