How to Root your T-Mobile Galaxy Note SGH-T879 and Install TWRP recovery

T-Mobile Galaxy Note SGH-T879 was recently rooted and we published a tutorial about how to root and install CWM recovery. This time we have come up with a new Tutorial that can root T-Mobile Galaxy Note on latest firmware. The recent ICS based firmware update for T-Mobile SG Note unrooted the device and thus there is a new way to get the root and install TWRP recovery. TWRP is a touch based recovery and sometimes preferred over ClockWorkMod. We have also detailed the procedure to install TWRP recovery on Galaxy Note.

How to root T-Mobile Galaxy Note SGH-T879 and Install CWM recovery

Pre-Requisite:

  1. Make sure that you have downloaded and install Kies on your Computer which is required to install necessary drivers on your device. Click here for Kies Software.
  2. We request you to create the backup of your device’s Data  as you may lose all your precious information during the process of installation. Sometime, if the process goes wrong then you may have to flash a stock firmware that will erase all data.
  3. This process works well on AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers, Telus, Bell LTE Galaxy Note models. Please do not use it on International Galaxy Note N7000.

Odin 1.85.zip

Part 1: Root your T-Mobile Galaxy Note

Step 1.     Assuming that you have downloaded the files from the link provided. Now, you need to extract the Odin 1.85.zip file which is required to flash firmware, kernel, etc on your Galaxy Note.

Step 2.     After extracting the Odin 1.85.zip file, you need to right-click on Odin3 v1.85.exe file and select Run as administrator to open it.

Step 3.     Now, turn off your Galaxy Note to enter into Download mode by pressing and holding Volume Up + Volume Down + Power buttons simultaneously until a warning message appears on the screen. Then press the Volume Up button for entering into Download mode.

Step 4.     Then you need to connect your Note to the Computer while Odin is open and you will see a ‘Added!!’ message under Odin’s message box.

Step 5.     In Odin, you need to click on PDA button and then browse and select the tmob-system.img.tar file which you have downloaded under ‘Downloads’ section. (Make sure that, you have made any other changes and Re-Partition option is not selected at all.)

Step 6.     Then, click on Start button to start flashing the rooting package on your phone. After the completion of the flashing process, you will get a PASS message and your device will reboot automatically. Then you need to disconnect your device from Computer.

Now, you are free to run any rooted apps. After rooting your Galaxy Note, you need to install TWRP Recovery for it. So, proceed with next part mentioned below-

Part 2: Install TWRP recovery on T-Mobile Galaxy Note

Step 1.     You need to download the app called GooManager from the Play Store. But if you don’t find it on the Play Store or it is not compatible with your device than you can manually download the .APK from here. Then, place it to your SD card and install it manually through file manager.

Step 2.     Now, open GooManager app on your Note and grant it root access by pressing Grant/Allow button when it prompt.

Step 3.     Then you need to press the menu button and click on ‘Install OpenRecoveryScript’ and click on Yes. Select ‘Yes’ on the next screen to confirm the installation.

Step 4.     Now, TWRP recovery will be installed on your Galaxy Note after a reboot.

Step 5.     After the installation of TWRP recovery, open the GooManager app and then you need to press the Reboot recovery button to reboot into recovery.
