It will help you will you to root your device so that you can further make changes into the system folders that are generally not possible. The article will also help you to install ClockworkMod recovery or TWRP recovery whichever of the two you want. What to do before installing ROM or Rooting your device?

Step 1: We always suggest a full backup of your Android device before you go for rooting or installing custom ROM. Backup all your SMS, Backup/Export Contacts, Backup APN settings. You can also follow our Tutorial on creating backup of Android device without root access.

Step 2: You should also Backup all apps, if you have not rooted your device yet then follow this procedure to backup apps. If you have a rooted device then use Titanium to Backup and restore apps and cache data.

Step 3: Enable USB debugging on your device, Go to settings>>Developer options and check the USB debug box. If you are not able to get it check our detailed guide on enabling USB debugging on Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread.

Step 4: Always check your battery before performing rooting procedure or installing ROM. If you have low battery status then you may face interruption while the procedure and it may brick your device. Check our tutorial on how to get battery percentage on Status bar.

Step 5: If you are going to install Custom ROM then it’s better to create a full Nandroid Backup of your device. You can also use Custom recovery to create Nandroid backup.

Step 6: We would also suggest disabling security apps and programs like Antivirus and Firewall on your Android device as it may interrupt the procedure.

Step 7: The Bootloader of your Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE XT897 should be unlocked. If it is not so, go to Motorola’s Official Website to do so.

Download Android SDK, SuperSU app, ClockworkMod Recovery and TWRP Recovery (Either of the two you want) from here to your computer. Install Android SDK on your PC, copy the “cwmrecovery.img” into the same folder where Fastboot.exe is located. Place the SuperSU.zip file into the root directory of your phone’s SD Card.

Steps to Root Photon Q 4G LTE XT897 and flash ClockworkMod and TWRP Recovery:

Step 1: Reboot your phone so as to enter it in Bootloader Mode. To do so, press and hold the Volume Down + Volume Up + Power buttons together, when the screen turns ON select “AP fastboot”.

Step 2: Now, connect your phone to the PC via original USB i.e. the USB cable that came with it.

Step 3: Open a Command Prompt window from the Android SDK platform-tools folder with Windows explorer.

Step 4: Now, type the command that follows in the command prompt window:

fastboot devices (to check if your phone has been detected or not)

fastboot flash recovery cwmrecovery.img (to install ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone)

Step 5: Once again enter into Bootloader Mode and then select “Recovery” to boot into ClockworkMod.

Step 6: Now, from main recovery menu, select “install zip from sdcard” then select “choose zip from sdcard” and then select “SuperSU” file you’ve placed on it.

Step 7: As soon as the flashing process has completed, select “+++++Go Back+++++” and then select “reboot system now”.

For TWRP Recovery:

Step 1: Place the TWRP Recovery image to the C drive of your PC.

Step 2: Now, connect your phone to the PC using original USB cable i.e. the cable that came with it.

Step 3: Open up a command prompt on your PC by pressing the Windows button and then press R, this will open up the RUN dialog, now type “cmd” into it and then press enter.

Step 4: Now, change the working directory of the command prompt to the location where you have saved the TWRP Recovery image. Enter the location of the file in this format:

cd c:\location of file

Step 5: Now, boot your device into Fastboot Mode. To do so, enter the command that follows in the command prompt window:

adb reboot Bootloader

Step 6: Now, enter the command that follows to install the TWRP Recovery:

fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.4.0.0-asanti_c.img

Step 7: As soon as the installation process has completed, unplug your device from the PC and reboot it.

Step 8: Now, to boot into TWRP Recovery, when your phone is OFF, press and hold the Volume Up + Home + Power buttons together until the screen turns ON.
