How to Root Nexus 7 on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean – Unlock Bootloader, Flash ClockWorkMod recovery

Nexus 7  is just available for Pre-order on GameSpot and shipping date is not yet confirmed. Developer community has already achieved root on it. All credit goes to Rootzwiki member developer Birdman and friends. We are here providing a detailed step by Step tutorial that will guide you through the procedure of rooting Nexus 7. I will also help you with unlocking bootloader and flashing ClockWorkMod recovery.

Nexus 7 Unlock bootloader - Root - Install CWM recovery

we will suggest you to create a Backup of all your data before rooting.

How to unlock Nexus 7 Bootloader:

Step 1: Download Android SDK and Install it on your PC. If you want a detail guide on installing SDK then proceed here.

Step 2: Enable USB Debugging from settings>Developer Options. and check the USB debugging box.

Step 3: Now, Connect Nexus 7 Tablet to PC using the Micro USB cable. Browse to the fastboot folder inside the location where Android SDK is installed it will be on the Windows drive[C:/]. Once you are in the folder press Shift and right click on the empty space of folder to bring up a context menu that will have the option “Open Command Window here”.

Step 4: Enter the following command in the command Window.

fastboot oem unlock

once the flashing is complete proceed by executing below mentioned command

fastboot reboot

Step 5: Download and place the recovery created by developer in the fastboot folder. Download recovery.img here.

Once you download and copy recovery.img to fastboot folder execute below mentioned command:[if you have changed the name of recovery file replace it]

fastboot flash recovery CWM-grouper-recovery.img

Step 6: Reboot by entering following command:

Fastboot reboot

Now, to make custom recovery permanent [avoid losing access to CWM recovery], enter following command in terminal.

mount system

adb shell

cd /system

mv recovery-from-boot.p recovery-from-boot.bak

How to root Nexus 7 on Jelly Bean and gain root access:

Step 1: Download here. and place it on the root folder of SD card on your Nexus 7. Connect via USB storage mode and copy paste the file.

Step 2: Enter into CWM recovery – shut down the tablet, press and keep holding Volume up + Volume down + power button for 5-10 seconds until screen flash with iconic CWM logo.

Step 3: From the main menu, navigate to install zip from Sdcard> choose zip from SD card and select [navigate using volume rocker and select using power button]

Step 4: it will take few seconds to install the zip file. Once done select “Go Back” and then select “reboot system now”.

You have successfully rooted your Nexus 7, you will get SuperSU in the app drawer. You can confirm that you have successfully rooted or not check this tutorial.
