How to Root Nexus 10 and Install ClockworkMod Recovery on it running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

The Google Nexus 10 is assumed to be one of the best designed Android tablets yet. In terms of weight, this is a very light weight tablet with slightly concave shape and beveled back designed. Those, people who have got this brand new and shiny device can now easily root it and also install ClockworkMod Recovery on it.

Rooting will enable you to access the system files which are normally not possible and make modifications according to your choice. In addition to this, installing the famous recovery i.e. ClockworkMod Recovery will provide the best platform to flash custom ROM and kernels easily and safely.

This rooting method has been reported to be working on the Wi-Fi version only. Do not try this tutorial on any other device or any other variant of Nexus.

What to do before installing ROM or Rooting your device?

Step 1: We always suggest a full backup of your Android device before you go for rooting or installing custom ROM. Backup all your SMS, Backup/Export Contacts, Backup APN settings. You can also follow our Tutorial on creating backup of Android device without root access.

Step 2: You should also Backup all apps, if you have not rooted your device yet then follow this procedure to backup apps. If you have a rooted device then use Titanium to Backup and restore apps and cache data.

Step 3: Enable USB debugging on your device, Go to settings>>Developer options and check the USB debug box. If you are not able to get it check our detailed guide on enabling USB debugging on Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread.

Step 4: Always check your battery before performing rooting procedure or installing ROM.If you have low battery status then you may face interruption while the procedure and it may brick your device. Check our tutorial on how to get battery percentage on Status bar.

Step 5: If you are going to install Custom ROM then it’s better to create a full Nandroid Backup of your device. You can also use Custom recovery to create Nandroid backup.

Step 6: We would also suggest disabling security apps and programs like Antivirus and Firewall on your Android device as it may interrupt the procedure.

Step 7: Ensure that the Bootloader of your Nexus 10 has been unlocked before proceeding with this article.

I am sure that if you take care of above mentioned steps carefully then there is lot less chance of issues. If you face any issues with ROM then you can revert back to previous Nandroid Backup. Also you have all SMS, settings and apps data with you that can be restored anytime.

Download Fastboot and ADB, ClockworkMod Recovery Package and Rooting Package from here to your computer. Install Fastboot and ADB onto your Windows PC in C:/ Android folder. Next, Place the ClockworkMod Recovery file in the same folder where you’ve installed the Fastboot and ADB, rename the recovery file as “recovery”. Lastly, place the rooting package to the root directory of your tablet’s SD card.

How to Root Nexus 10 and Install ClockworkMod Recovery on it:

Step 1: Reboot your tablet so as to enter it in Bootloader Mode. To do so, press and hold the Volume Up + Volume Down + Power buttons together until the screen of your tablet turns ON and displays “START” in green,

Step 2: Now, connect your tablet to the PC via original USB cable i.e. the cable that came with it.

Step 3: Next, open command prompt window on your PC and type the command that follows:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Step 4: Wait until the recovery is flashed, then type the command that follows in the command prompt window:

fastboot reboot-bootloader

Step 5: When your tablet boots up, it boot up in Bootloader mode. Now, use the Volume Up/Down buttons to select “Recovery” on your Nexus 10’s screen and press the Power button to select it.

Step 6: Now, from main CWM menu, select “Install zip from SD Card” and then select “Choose zip from SD card” then press “0” and then select the rooting package you’ve placed on the SD card. Select “Yes” on the next screen that follows to confirm your action.

Step 7: The flashing process will start and complete in few minutes.

Step 8: As soon as the flashing process has completed, select “Go back” and then select “Reboot system now” to reboot your tablet.
