How to Root and Install ClockworkMod Recovery on Sony Xperia Acro S

Sony Xperia Acro S is a new device launched a month ago with Dual core 1.5Ghz processor and Adreno 220 GPU. It featured a scratch resistant shatterproof 4.3inch touchscreen. Most of the customers are happy and proud. For those who still expect more from Acro S can now root the device and install custom recovery so that they can backup their firmware and play some more with Android Modds and customization. There are few custom ROM available for Xperia Acro S but we expect that a CyanogenMod 10 based Jelly Bean ROM will be released soon.

Root Sony Xperia Acro S and install CWM recovery

Warning: Neither we nor the developer will hold any responsibility if you damage your phone in the process of following this article. Therefore, please proceed at your own risk.

Pre-Requisites:

  • The methods and steps mentioned in this article should only be tried on Sony Xperia Acro S.
  • Ensure that there is at least 70% charge with your device, so that there will be no Power interruption during the process.
  • You need to backup all essential data’s on your phone, to assure that there will be no data loss during the process.
  • Disable all Security programs like Firewall and Antivirus from your computer and uninstall the same from your phone, as these security programs generally tend to interrupt the process.
  • Enable USB Debugging in your Sony Xperia Acro S from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. The option of USB Debugging should be ticked.

Download  Rootingkit1.0.2.rar, Flashtool, SO-03D_6.0.A.5.12_Docomo.ftf.7zLT26w_6.1.A.1.58 (4.0.4)_Taiwan_Sony.ftf, Xperia Drivers, AcroS_Kernel_61A245.zip and fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.rar from here to your computer.

Procedure to Root Xperia Acro S and Install CWM recovery 

Step1: Extract the SO-03D_6.0.A.5.12_Docomo.ftf.7z file you’ve downloaded earlier. This extracted folder should contain a file named SO-03D_6.0.A.5.12_Docomo.ftf.

Step2: Now, install Flashtool on your PC and copy SO-03D_6.0.A.5.12_Docomo.ftf to C:\flashtool\firmwares. Delete anything else that may be present in this folder.

Step3: Next, run Flashtool by going to Start -> Programs and clicking on Flashtool.

Step4: Click on the Flash (the lightning bolt icon underneath File) and select Flashmode.

Step5: Select the SO-03D firmware, make sure that everything is ticked under the Wipe section and then click OK.

Step6: Follow the on-screen instructions but instead of pressing the back button, press and hold Volume Down. Wait for the flashing process to complete and then close Flashtool.

Step7: Now, reboot your device and connect it to your PC via original USB cable i.e. the cable that came with it.

Step8: Extract “Rootingkit1.0.2.rar” from the downloaded files.

Step9: From the extracted folder, run Step 1.bat.

Step10: Flash LT26w_6.1.A.1.58 (4.0.4)_Taiwan_Sony.ftf firmware you downloaded above using Flashtool and the same steps listed in the previous section; this time, make sure that everything under the Wipe section is unchecked and the No Final Verification option under Misc is checked. Close Flashtool once done.

Step11: Once again reboot you phone and connect it to your PC.

Step12: From the extracted “Rootingkit1.0.2” folder, run Step2.bat. Your device is successfully rooted by now.

Step13: Now, for installing CWM Recovery on your Sony Xperia Acro S, first of all extract “fastboot_with_Android_USB_file.rar” to C:\drive. This should contain two folders named “fastboot” and “usb_driver”.

Step14: Now, extract “AcroS_Kernel_61A245.zip” to the “fastboot” folder.

Step15: Next, connect your phone to the PC in fastboot mode. To do so, first reboot your phone and Connect the USB cable first to your PC and then connect the microUSB end of the cable to your device while holding Volume Up and then Windows should automatically install the necessary drivers; if not use the usb_driver folder to install the necessary of them.

Step16: Now, open Command prompt Window and type the command that follows:

cd c:\fastboot_with_Android_USB_file\fastboot

 

fastboot flash boot kernel-cwm.elf

Step17: Reboot your phone and tap on the Sony logo when booting and the blue LED comes on. You will land into CWM Recovery mode.
