LG Optimus Black P970 is a good and appealing phone running on Android 2.2 Froyo OS with WVGA display. The Optimus Black P970 is powered by a 1 GHz Cortex-A8 processor with a PowerVR SGX530 GPU for handling graphic intensive apps. It features a Nova IPS Display which LG claims it to be the best ever display they have fitted on a smartphone. The screen packs the same 800 x 480 pixels as that on the LG Optimus 2X, albeit with enhanced brightness, richer contrast ratios and improved sunlight legibility. The 5 megapixel camera on the Optimus P970 is complimented by a LED flash and can record 720p HD video. There is a front facing 2 megapixel camera for video calls.

However, the lack of updates for its Android OS has disappointed many of its users. There isn’t even an official Android 4.0 update for it. But, now the owners of Optimus Black P970 can rejoice as XDA Developer member cheleicpp has developed a compatible custom ROM based on AOKP for this device. The ROM being based on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has a butter-smooth interface and trusted features.

What to do before installing ROM or Rooting your device?

Step 1: We always suggest a full backup of your Android device before you go for rooting or installing custom ROM. Backup all your SMS, Backup/Export Contacts, Backup APN settings. You can also follow our Tutorial on creating backup of Android device without root access.

Step 2: You should also Backup all apps, if you have not rooted your device yet then follow this procedure to backup apps. If you have a rooted device then use Titanium to Backup and restore apps and cache data.

Step 3: Enable USB debugging on your device, Go to settings>>Developer options and check the USB debug box. If you are not able to get it check our detailed guide on enabling USB debugging on Jelly Bean, Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread.

Step 4: Always check your battery before performing rooting procedure or installing ROM.If you have low battery status then you may face interruption while the procedure and it may brick your device. Check our tutorial on how to get battery percentage on Status bar.

Step 5: ClockworkMod Recovery must have been installed onto your LG Optimus Black P970 before proceeding with this article. (The Optimus Black does not have a button combination that allows it to boot into ClockworkMod Recovery. anReboot s a recommended app that will allow you to access ClockworkMod through Recovery Mode.)

Step 6: If you are going to install Custom ROM then it’s better to create a full Nandroid Backup of your device. You can also use Custom recovery to create Nandroid backup.

Step 7: We would also suggest disabling security apps and programs like Antivirus and Firewall on your Android device as it may interrupt the procedure.

Download AOKP Build 4 ROM and Google Apps Package from here to your computer. Place both downloaded files onto the root directory of your phone’s SD card.

Procedure to Install Unofficial AOKP ROM based on Android 4.1.1 onto LG Optimus Black P970:

Step 1: Reboot your p hone so as to enter it in ClockworkMod Recovery. To do so, run anReboot on your phone and select ClockworkMod Recovery.

Step 2: You can create a Nandroid Backup of your existing ROM so that you can revert the same whenever you want. To do this, go to “Backup and Restore” and then select “Backup”.

Step 3: Now, from the main recovery menu, select “Wipe data/factory reset” and then select “Yes” on the next screen that follows to confirm your action.

Step 4: Next, select “Install ZIP from SD card” then select “Choose ZIP from SD card” and then choose the ROM file you’ve placed on the SD card.

Step 5: As soon as the installation procedure has completed, flash the ROM file form the SD card in the same manner as you’ve flashed the ROM file.

Step 6: When the installation procedure has completed, select “Reboot system now” to reboot your phone.
