How to Backup and Restore ROM [Nandroid Image] using custom recovery- ClockWorkMod, TWRP, xRecovery, 4EXT

We always make sure that our users are on the safe side so before installing a custom ROM we always mention to backup ROM using CWM recovery. ClockWorkMod is a custom Recovery for Android and the functionality is much like other recoveries available for HTC and Samsung devices. Here we are providing a detailed tutorial on creating Nandroid image of Android Phone and Tablets using Custom recovery. The steps are pretty same for xRecovery, 4EXT recovery or TWRP recovery.

Please ensure that Phone is rooted and has necessary root access with custom Recovery installed on it.

Backup Restore ROM using Custom recovery- TWRP, 4EXT, Xrecovery, ClockWorkMod

Procedure to Backup Nandroid Images using ClockworkMod Recovery:

Step 1: First of all, launch ROM manager and click on “Reboot to Recovery”, to reboot into ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery. (You can even press and hold the specific combination of buttons according to your device to manually boot into CWM recovery.)

Step 2: In the CWM Recovery menu, use the Volume up/down keys and home/power button to navigate to “backup & restore” and then tap on “backup” to begin the backup process of your phone. Creating a Nandroid backup will take around 10-15 minutes for successful completion. This procedure is called creating a Nandroid Backup of the existingROM.

Step 3: That’s it! You’ve successfully created a Nandroid Backup of your existing ROM. Reboot your phone as soon as the backup process has completed.

You also need to transfer the contents of the backup to the desktop of your PC from:

/sdcard/clockworkmod/backup

Procedure to Restore Nandroid Images using ClockworkMod Recovery:

Step 1: Once again, launch ROM manager and click on “Reboot to Recovery”, to reboot into ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery. (You can even press and hold the specific combination of buttons according to your device to manually boot into CWM recovery.)

Step 2: Now, from the CWM Recovery menu, use the Volume up/down keys and home/power button to navigate to “backup & restore” and then tap on “restore” to restore the backup you’ve created earlier.

Step 3: The Backup up process will take up to 10-15 minutes, so be patient.

Step 4: As soon as the restore process has completed, you can reboot your phone by tapping on “reboot system now” to reboot your phone to continue using it.
