We have already told you how you can root your Nexus 7 easily and install Custom recovery. Most of the Nexus 7 users have break into free world and install custom ROMs. In our previous post we told you about the best custom ROMs available for Nexus 7.  Right now, I am going to tell Nexus 7 how they can install Glazed Jelly Bean ROM on their Tablet.

Glazed Jelly Bean is the best ROM available for Nexus 7 right now. It is rock solid stable with lots of features. Based on the Official firmware released for Nexus 7, developers have rooted, zipaligned and deodexed the ROM to provide best fluid interface and performance. The ROM also includes a new apps called Glazed Mods that will allow tweaking and customization of default interface and thus you have more control. Glazed Jelly Bean ROM for Nexus 7 features Beats Audio and Sony Bravia Engine Video enhancements. You will also get the Linaro kernel installed by default that provides Over clocking GPU and hardware based rendering for User interface and thus improves performance to next level. With Glazed Jelly Bean you can easily hit a Benchmark of 4800+ [Tested on Quadrant Benchmark test app]  which is competing with Samsung Galaxy SIII.

Pre-Requisite:

  1. First you need to charge your Google Nexus 7 device to at least 80%. This would be necessary for the completion of the process.
  2. Look for the antivirus and firewall in your device and Computer. Disable the same to avoid interruption during the installation process.
  3. You are also needed to enable the USB Debugging option on your Nexus 7 device so that your device gets recognized when connected to Computer. Here is the path to do this – ‘Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging’.
  4. Backup the entire data from your Nexus 7 as this process is going to wipe entire data and settings, which you can restore later from backup file you will create now. Here is the list of data and settings – SMS, Call Logs, Bookmarks, Contacts, Images, Music, Videos, APN (Access Point Names) settings and MMS settings etc.

Step 1.     As you have followed all the instructions mentioned under Pre-Requisite and also downloaded the zip file from provided link, you can now start the installation process with unlocking the bootloader on your device through the Nexus Root Toolkit.

Step 2.     Then you need to have a ClockworkMod recovery installed on your Nexus 7.  It will be better to install the Touch version of recovery as it is more convenient for you to flash the ROM.

Step 3.     Then, you need to connect your Nexus 7 to the Computer via original USB data cable and place the downloaded zip file to yours Tablet SD card.

Step 4.     Now, switch off your Tablet and then reboot into the recovery. For this you need to press and hold the Volume Up + Volume Down + Power buttons simultaneously until your device enters into the CWM recovery.

Step 5.     Then, you need to perform the Nandroid backup of your existing ROM just to make sure that in worse case you can restore it back from recovery. For creating the Nandroid backup, you need to select Backup and Restore > then on the next screen, select Backup again and return to the main menu. (If you are using TWRP recovery then you need to select Backup and slide the blue button to right of the screen to confirm backup).

Step 6.     Select ‘Wipe data/factory reset’ and again select ‘Wipe Cache partition’ to erase entire cache data from your device. Then, select ‘Yes’ to confirm the wiping process on the next screen.

Step 7.     Then, you have to navigate in ‘install zip from SD card >> choose zip from sdcard’ to browse to the SD card and choose the transferred zip file from the SD card. Then, you need to confirm the installation of ROM by tapping on ‘Yes – Install_____.zip’ on the next screen (those who are using TWRP recovery, they need to select Install and then ROM file). Then, the ROM will start installing on your device.

… Update: I cleaned data and reinstalled the glazed jellybean zip and it booted just fine.. except it was not any faster a boot up than the old rom — clockwork or whatever (the rom with one click root) I cant restore my data and apps from the rom toolkit app but luckily i had it also backed up with titanium which is restoring perfectly fine =)

In custom recovery, ie TWRP. Wipe cache and factory reset, re-boot and be patient the first boot takes about a minute…
Ps its smooth most of the time but freezes up on occassion, you need to hit the power button twice to fix this.
